Virtualized RAN
Accelerating software-centric
networks with Samsung vRAN
Virtualized Radio Access Network (vRAN) represents a groundbreaking evolution in mobile network architecture: it is transforming static, traditional Radio Access Network (RAN) hardware into agile, flexible software. With this new innovative approach, operators can optimize their RAN service deployment and management to significantly increase efficiency and reduce operational costs. Taking a software-centric approach enables greater control over resource allocation and facilitates tailored service offerings, enhancing customer satisfaction and driving business growth.
What makes Samsung vRAN unique?
vRAN 3.0
Samsung is a pioneer in vRAN technology, currently on its third iteration while many are just now entering the space. With vRAN 3.0, Samsung is enabling further performance enhancements, including multi-RAT support for 2G, 4G and 5G through a common platform and wide bandwidths. Samsung vRAN 3.0 gives operators a flexible network that is easily configured, integrated and deployed at scale with automation and orchestration. Furthermore, embracing a virtualized approach also gives operators energy efficiency benefits with various power saving features for a more sustainable network.
Robust ecosystem
vRAN embraces openness so multiple companies can come together to create a single network. Combined with the fact that Open RAN is starting to gain momentum around the world, it is crucial to build a strong ecosystem of partners at every layer of the network to give our customers the benefit of optionality. Samsung fosters a robust vRAN and Open RAN ecosystem with more than 20 industry-leading partners spanning a range of technologies, including servers, processors, cloud platforms, radio, and transport. With confirmed interoperability, Samsung brings pre-validated solutions into our customers’ commercial networks from Day 1.
CPU diversity
Samsung’s versatile vRAN is successfully integrated with a variety of CPU platforms. With diverse CPU platform support customers can more easily transition or adopt vRAN. Samsung is also furthering our partnerships to next-generation platforms and will expedite the delivery of latest technologies into commercial virtualized networks.
Samsung vRAN offers automation benefits
Samsung’s CognitiV Network Operations
Suite, or Samsung SMO, enables multi-party
end-to-end network automation from network
deployment, operation, analysis and
optimization for easier and more efficient
network management. With network
automation, operators can increase their
efficiencies by minimizing human error to
flexibly activate network changes and/or
upgrades.
info
After hardware servers are installed at each site, the rest of Samsung’s vRAN deployment process can be performed remotely at the central data center. Our solution supports mass deployment and can install up to 250 servers within 2.5 hours, which translates to roughly 10,000 sites in 20 business days. By utilizing AI, our solution generates optimal parameters for network optimization during installation.
*Done manually, it would take 5.5 hours to install each server.
Real time and non-real time information is transmitted to the federated inventory and unified monitoring database. Through this unified monitoring system, operators can enjoy closed-loop automation in network operation including updates, scaling, troubleshooting and root cause analysis (RCA).
Samsung’s CognitiV Network Operations Suite delivers network insights by collecting CM/FM/PM data from the Element Management System (EMS) and enables network operators to monitor and analyze data more efficiently. Operators can create user-defined network KPI dashboards through pivot table functions and share the KPI reports with a simple click of a button.
Samsung’s various intelligent automation applications offer network optimization capabilities to provide better performance and an enhanced user experience. Features including the Energy Saving Manager (ESM), Load Balancing Manager (LBM) and coverage optimization take advantage of AI to precisely predict network conditions and improve overall network experience.
Energy-
intelligent
solution for vRAN
Energy saving is one of the most critical considerations for a sustainable network. To create a greener virtualized network, Samsung has developed various energy-saving features that minimize energy consumption by turning off network elements or dynamically allocatef resources based on traffic volume. Samsung’s vRAN is managed by the Energy Saving Manager (ESM), which consolidates multiple energy-saving features into one platform. ESM improves energy efficiency by automatically analyzing hourly traffic patterns and optimizing operating conditions of each network element, per sector, and during specific time periods. Through our collaboration with CPU manufacturers who are also provide power-saving features, we integrate these features with Samsung’s energy-saving capabilities to maximize energy savings and achieve a more efficient network for our customers.
Samsung is the global leader in vRAN
The transition to true vRAN is underway worldwide and Samsung is proud to pave the way for our customers. As the only major vendor with large-scale commercial vRAN deployments around the globe, Samsung has now achieved a milestone of over 38,000 vRAN sites* deployed globally - all carrying commercial traffic. With extensive experience and proven technologies from commercial vRAN networks, we ensure excellence and stability while efficiently tackling various challenges facing operators throughout the process. * End of 2023
