RAN Energy Saving
Our Journey Towards
A Sustainable Network
Sustainability is a core value that Samsung cherishes and is committed to at both a corporate and business level. Samsung is constantly working to enable sustainable network operations for our customers. One way that Samsung is helping its customers is by minimizing energy consumption in their networks, especially in the RAN, which tends to consume the most energy. To do so, Samsung is innovating and evolving its products and solutions to enhance energy efficiencies with its suite of energy savings solutions. Samsung aims to bring positive changes to everyday lives and around the world to advance its customers’ journey towards sustainability.
Reducing energy
with
in-house chips
In-house chip
Samsung starts the sustainability journey with the smallest components to maximize performance and minimize power consumption. For example, the company leverages its in-house chipsets for its RAN products, including the baseband, which is continuously going through modem technology innovations to focus on lower power consumption per cell. For Massive MIMO Radios, Samsung is turning previously FPGA-based beamforming and DFE/AFE functions into chipsets to also reduce power consumption. Furthermore, Samsung is enhancing power amplifier efficiencies in the RAN, where most of the power consumption occurs to increase energy savings.
Integrated products
Another strategy Samsung is pursuing is to integrate products to minimize physical hardware to reduce both site footprint and power consumption. This includes diverse multi-band, dual-and tri-band, radios in the low bands. In the mmWave spectrum, the Dual-band Compact Macro combines the baseband, radio and antenna functions into a single product.
Dynamic network
operation
with
intelligent software
and
management
Samsung’s adaptive energy savings software enables dynamic RAN operation, which adjusts resources depending on real-time traffic patterns. During times of high traffic, full power consumption may be required from the radios, but during mid to low traffic, customers can choose to activate energy savings features to reduce power consumption. For example, our radios deep sleep feature has varying levels of sleep and different radio functions are turned off depending on traffic levels. With super sleep, almost all functions of the radio are turned off so that radio power consumption reaches near zero watt when there is no traffic.
software features
Samsung also provides a comprehensive energy savings
management solution based on AI and automation. With
this
management solution, customers are able to control,
monitor and analyze energy savings features for
increased energy
efficiencies. The Samsung Energy Savings Manager
automatically controls energy savings features with
AI-based traffic
predictions for optimized network operations.

network
Samsung is not only focused on reducing energy
consumption but also
developing solutions to increase the use of
renewable energy sources
and accelerate Net Zero emissions.
Our green site power solution charges batteries
through solar panels and
with the smart controller feature, batteries are
only used when necessary.
By doing so, operators can optimize the energy used
at a site and only
utilizes renewable energy sources during times of
