You need to consider both the size and weight of the load. To estimate the weight, figure 3 - 4 pounds of dry laundry per the cubic foot size of the compartment. Generally speaking, a small load will be 3 - 5 pounds (or 1/3 full), and a large load would be 6 - 16 pounds (or 3/4 full). Just remember, 1 pair of jeans weighs about 1 pound. The clothes should be in a very loose pile. If you have to push the laundry down to make room for more, you are overloading the washer. Comforters and blankets should fit snug, never cramped.

Your washer will have trouble if all the laundry is to one side. This will cause it to vibrate a lot when it spins, in which case the washer may choose to spin slower or not at all. This is more common with top loaders but can happen to front loaders as well, especially if there is only a single heavy item in the wash.Spread the laundry around evenly and make sure it doesn't get too twisted up and packed together to one side
