How to use Samsung DeX with Galaxy Tab S4?

You can use Samsung DeX in two ways, on tablet screen and external display.

Starting Samsung DeX on tablet screen

Use your tablet like a computer by connecting the Keyboard Cover.

To switch to Samsung DeX directly when connecting the Keyboard Cover, launch the Settings App, tap Advanced features > Samsung DeX, and then tap the Auto start when Book Cover Keyboard is connected switch to activate it.

Closing Samsung DeX on tablet screen

To close Samsung DeX on tablet screen, on the status bar, tap Up arrow icon > Home (Monitor within house icon). Alternatively, launch the Settings App, tap Samsung DeX > Auto start when Book Cover Keyboard is connected switch to deactivate it.

Starting Samsung DeX on external display

Connect your tablet to an external display and use tablet’s features on a large screen. Without changing your tablet’s screen, the Samsung DeX screen will appear on the connected TV or monitor.

To switch to Samsung DeX directly when connecting the DeX Cable, launch the Settings App, tap Advanced features > Samsung DeX, and then tap the Auto start when HDMI is connected switch to activate it.

Type of DeX Cable

Recommended DeX Cable for Galaxy Tab S4: USB Type-C to HDMI Adapter (EE-HG950), DeX Cable (EE-I3100).

Closing Samsung DeX on external display

To close Samsung DeX on external display, disconnect your tablet from the DeX Cable. Alternatively, launch the Settings App, tap Samsung DeX > Auto start when HDMI isconnected switch to deactivate it.

Use your tablet’s features in an interface environment similar to a computer. You can multitask by running multiple Apps simultaneously. You can also check your tablet’s notifications and status.

• Favourite Apps: Add frequently used apps to the Home screen and launch them quickly
• Apps button: View and run your tablet’s Apps. To install Apps that are optimised for Samsung DeX, tap Apps for Samsung DeX
• Taskbar: View the Apps that are currently running
• Status bar: View your tablet’s notifications and status. Status icons may appear differently depending on your tablet’s status. When you click, the quick setting buttons will appear. You can activate or deactivate certain tablet features using the quick setting buttons
• Quick access toolbar: Use quick tools, such as screen keyboard, volume control, or search

Using the external display and tablet simultaneously

While using Samsung DeX, you can use separate Apps on the external display and your tablet simultaneously.

For example, while watching a video on the connected TV or monitor, you can create a note on your tablet.

On the connected TV or monitor, launch an App to run on the Samsung DeX screen. Then, launch another App on your tablet.

Locking the Samsung DeX screen

If you want to lock the external display and your tablet’s screen while using Samsung DeX, select on the quick access toolbar.

Enjoying games vividly on a large screen

Play your tablet’s games on a large screen. On the connected TV or monitor, launch the Game Launcher App.

Controlling with an external keyboard and mouse

You can use a wireless keyboard/mouse or a Bluetooth keyboard/mouse. You can also use USB keyboard or mouse by connecting them to the Multiport Adapter’s USB port.

Using your tablet as a touchpad

You can use your tablet as a touchpad and operate it with your fingers or the S Pen. On your tablet, drag downwards from the top of the screen to open the notification panel and tap Use your tablet as a touchpad.

Orienting the touchpad

When you are using your tablet as a touchpad, you can use it in either the horizontal or vertical alignment.

To rotate the touchpad, rotate the tablet or double-tap Rotate (Rotating rectangle icon).

Using your tablet while using the touchpad

You can use Apps on your tablet even while it is being used as a touchpad. Drag upwards from the bottom of the screen to show the navigation bar, tap the Home button to move to the Home screen, and then select Apps you want to use.

Writing or drawing on the touchpad with the S Pen

You can handwrite or draw on the touchpad with the S Pen.

Rotate the touchpad to the vertical alignment and approach S Pen to screen. The S Pen drawing pad will appear on the touchpad.

Using the screen keyboard

When you enter text to send messages, create notes, or perform other tasks, a screen keyboard will appear automatically on your tablet’s screen without connecting an external keyboard.

If the keyboard does not appear, select Keyboard icon on the quick access toolbar.

Ending Samsung DeX

When you use Samsung DeX on tablet screen, on the status bar, tap Up arrow icon > Home (Monitor within house icon). When you use Samsung DeX from the connected TV or monitor, disconnect your tablet from the DeX Cable.
